A New, Neuroscience-Based Approach for Transforming Your Emotional Health and Wellness

There’s a Reason Why Talking About the Past Doesn't Help

Most types of psychotherapy focus on trying to resolve the painful past as a way to help people feel better.

But the past isn’t what holds people back.

I’ve seen some patients spend years in therapy without real results. Still feeling as stuck and hopeless as they were before they started.

That’s because digging deep in the past and focusing on all the negative things that happened only focuses on the why.

But knowing why you’re unhappy doesn’t teach you how to change or feel better.

What Neuroscience Says About Focusing on the Painful Past

Dwelling on negative past events can actually make people feel worse. When we think about painful things our body releases cortisol and other neurotransmitters, which can create even more negative emotions and create a vicious cycle.

So if focusing on the past isn’t the answer...what is?

Focus on the Future Instead

Since we can only move forward in time, our brain has developed to be future oriented. When we anticipate good things happening to us and living a life that we’re really looking forward to, our brain produces positive feel good chemicals like dopamine, which allow us to experience emotions like joy and happiness.

Many of the patients I’ve worked with over the years didn’t dare to dream about how their lives could be different, because they didn’t believe it was possible.  What they needed was to know HOW to break out of the automatic thinking that was keeping them stuck and to develop a set of skills that would allow them to create a better future.

Their hopelessness motivated me to do years of research that led to developing a method to show people exactly HOW to break free from the past, so they could take charge of their life and finally start to thrive again.

So, how can you learn to do this?

Use the 4 Step, Future Directed Therapy® Process

Future Directed Therapy® (FDT) is a new skill-based approach for helping people overcome depression, that is informed by decades of scientific research. It was developed at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and Emory Healthcare and it’s helped people all over the world regain their emotional health.

Instead of focusing on why you feel bad, FDT focuses on helping you take charge of your thinking and your life, so that you can start thriving.

The 4-Step Process

01

Prepare

In this section you’ll learn to get ready for the change process and deal with the obstacles that often get in the way of progress.

02

Learn

Here you'll learn a set of science-based skills for how to break free of old negative patterns of thinking and behavior, as well as how you can create a future you look forward to with joy and enthusiasm.

03

Act

In this step you will start to transform your life by taking action. If you’ve ever said to yourself “I know what to do, but I just can’t make myself do it,” this step will finally help you find the ability to move your life forward.

04

Thrive

This is the step where action and acceptance meet, which is the sweet spot for creating your life. Action is what moves you forward, but when you’re working on changing your life, there will always be things outside of your control and disappointments you encounter along the way. Knowing how to successfully navigate these stumbling blocks will help you stay the course until you find that place of thriving and emotional well-being that you’re looking for.
